Yesterday I visited our local science museum. None other than “The Science Museum” in the Albertopolis of South Kensington. This always used to be a fascinating museum, but it is increasingly apparent with age how it is really designed for children. Even taking that into account I am confident that as a child I would have found the contents of the Wellcome wing tedious, being as it is more of an “experience” than a museum. Much of the museum now has a high-tech feel with gadgets, gizmos and brightly coloured plastic everywhere you look. Many of the exhibitions I remember are still there and in places somewhat dated, including an Oil tanker in the shipping hall giving a prediction of 500,000 tonnes DWT somewhere in the future ahead of 1971 that would have been dated when I was a child, but the old rail hall appears to be no more. Is the prevalence of “experiences” degrading science education, or is it the only way to keep people excited about attending?
