Time for a limerick

A preacher called Hovind in gaol
Has time for debates through the mail
He’ll research all his answers
From debates where he prances
And we’ll find all his answers are stale

And there are others where that came from, for your reading pleasure.

Hovind

It seems that prayers do not necessarily work as well as the good doctor might hope. For many a year, “Dr” Kent Hovind has been lying to the public, preaching his own brand of creationism with a level of honesty that would embarrass most con artists. At the same time he has been failing to pay taxes to the United States government. His earlier lies are, unfortunately for society (but if truth be told, morally we cannot legislate against viewpoints) not illegal. Tax evasion has the convenient feature that it is, in fact, illegal. It was a solution that worked against Al Capone, and it worked against Hovind.

Having said that, I don’t want to give Hovind credit for being chased as a preacher. Just because I don’t like his preaching, and feel it is convenient that the law has a way to deal with him, I think that is simply part of his dishonesty. Related, yes, a consequence, doubtful. He has been sentenced to ten years. Is this harsh? His tax evasion was severe, his dishonesty is clear, and he has a self righteous attitude about the whole thing. Even so, maybe it is harsh. Most importantly, in a country with such a conservative and Christian outward impression, it is nice to see that Christian Fundamentalists are able to be convicted, even when they try to use their god against the authorities.
