Irving – again

Saturday, December 23rd, 2006

I posted about this “Gentleman” before. David Irving, Holocaust denier extraordinaire, has been freed from his Austrian containment and shows no remorse for his actions.Karen Pollock, quoted from the BBC article, stated that Holocaust denial is anti-Semitism dressed up as intellectual debate”, it appears that she is unable to see that often anti-Semitism is a claim that demonstrates bigotry on the part of the accuser. Actual anti-Semitism is an evil thing. Accusing people of it for simply holding views that are not the same as your own and attempting to brand them with it is even worse. While she accuses Irving of having lost his credibility as an historian, I fear that Mrs Pollock has lost her credibility as a decent person. She went on to say: “Holocaust denial, in whatever guise it appears must be challenged” without apparently understanding that challenging is not what Irving is complaining about. Irving is an unusual character, who has held some quite unpleasant views in the past, if not now. On this matter he has the moral high ground, and I am perfectly happy with his lack of remorse. Karen Pollock should be ashamed of herself for supporting Austria’s fear of free speech and support for the point of view held by middle eastern nations about hypocrisy in Europe.

I’m not sure I know the purpose of this space, but it was certainly amusing…

ADSL LLU and Eclipse

Saturday, December 9th, 2006

My ISP, Eclipse, wrote to me a few days ago telling me that they would be moving me onto local loop unbundling if I didn’t opt out. This, they say, allows them to provide better service for a lower price. In this they are probably not lying, however, there is one major hidden feature. If you read the FAQ on their website the following note stands out:

If the LLU transfer process has begun or has been completed, we are unable to:
  • return you to your old IPStream service; or
  • give you your MAC at present due to the lack of a formal proven migration process established between these services

So, in other words, if you don’t opt out of this scheme, you’re stuck with us if you don’t want a couple of weeks of down time to transfer to another ISP. Well… in that case, I think not. Eclipse’s service has been going down hill recently anyway, and I was considering moving elsewhere, maybe I will do so.

Moralists

Friday, December 8th, 2006

And in fact there have been consistent moralists who wanted people to be different, namely virtuous, who wanted to have people in their own image, which is that of an idiot: and to this end they negated the world. – Friedrich Nietzsche

Pigs

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

While we’re on the Muslim theme, and I know it’s been some time since the last post, I thought this would be worth a mention. According to The Sun.

NOVELTY pig calendars and toys have been banned from a council office — in case they offend Muslim staff.Workers in the benefits department at Dudley Council, West Midlands, were told to remove or cover up all pig-related items, including toys, porcelain figures, calendars and even a tissue box featuring Winnie the Pooh and Piglet.

Bosses acted after a Muslim complained about pig-shaped stress relievers delivered to the council in the run-up to the Islamic festival of Ramadan.

The fear of free speech among a minority of Muslims strikes again.

ETA: Actually, it appears it struck some time ago, unfortunately I was only just informed.
